Race Week in Italy (Emilia Romagna-Imola)
Miami GP History: Imola was added to the revised F1 calendar 2020, intended as a "one-off" race, and has been consistent since. The 2023 Grand Prix was canceled due to heavy flooding in the region. While it is a recent addition to F1, Imola has a rich history with Formula One, having hosted a Grand Prix for nearly thirty years, consistently known as the San Marino Grand Prix.
It also holds some dark memories of F1's history, being the site of the tragic 1994 weekend when two drivers, Roland Ratzenberger and Aryton Senna, tragically passed away on the same weekend. Many tribute sites are scattered across the circuit campus, a poignant reminder of the great drivers who have graced this circuit. Despite its darker moments, Imola is a place of beauty, with its stunning landscapes and 15th-century architecture.
About the Track: The circuit's history is fascinating, dating back to the 1950s when it was used for motorcycle racing. In the 1960s, it hosted a non-championship race, and again in the 1970s before officially being added to the F1 championship in 1980. The circuit has had several variations, each adding to its allure. It is known for its long, fast, sweeping corners and historic chicanes. In the late 2000s, renowned F1 track architect Hermann Tilke oversaw a reconstruction. The current circuit is a nineteen-corner, 4.909 km (3.050 miles) circuit with a Grand Prix of 63 Laps.
Weekend Highlights:
How good can McLaren be? Fresh off his maiden victory at the Miami Grand Prix, Lando Norris etched his name in F1 history as the latest British driver to win a Grand Prix. Mclaren has taken third place in constructors championship points behind RB and Ferrari. Is it possible for McLaren to compete for second in the constructors title?
VCARB bounces back in Miami. The Miami GP was a great race for both Daniel and Yuki. Daniel finished fourth in the Saturday sprint race, scoring 5 points, and Yuki finished seventh in the grand prix, scoring 6 points, adding to his single point from the sprint race for a 7-point weekend. After a double DNF in China, Miami was exactly what VCARB needed. Can they carry this over into Italy? Daniel has two sixth-place finishes with McLaren at Imola and his memorable third-place podium with Renault in 2020.
Is it in the bag for Red Bull? Max Verstappen found himself in an untypical spot at the Miami GP, the second step of the podium. With a commanding lead in the drivers and constructors ’ standings, the next few races are very important for Red Bull to take control of both standings, or we may see some cracks in the armor of Red Bull. Is it possible for Ferrari and McLaren to have more victories in 2024 to the point it would become more competitive? I would say its highly unlikely but not out of the question, we have seen many teams in the past surge as different parts of the season.
Haas is strong. Haas has continued to capture points in almost every race this season. Coming off a 2-point haul in Miami, Nico is the star, but Kevin has been the team hero. Kevin has found himself in some hot water with penalty points, only needing one more point for a race ban. Kevin racked up penalty points after a hard racing sprint race that resulted in the team getting points after Kevin fought off a charging Hamilton for multiple laps while Nico built a gap and a crash in Sunday’s race. Kevin could find himself sitting out one race shortly. Nothing to fear, Ollie Bearman is in reserve, and he had a fantastic debut this season with Ferrari while Carlos was out with his surgery. Haas seems to have it figured out, even with a race ban this season. Haas is standing in seventh place in the constructors, a massive jump forward after the ‘23 season's last-place finish.
Williams needs a strong weekend. Still yet to score points, Williams is not having the breakthroughs we all want to see. After an amazing ‘23 season, it felt like Williams was rising again; this season has been one mistake after another. The cars do not seem to be competing at the same race pace as last years cars, with Haas taking a huge step forward, the mid-field in more competitive than ever. Logan outperformed Alex in the Miami Sprint race, finishing a season-best eleventh place, but still out of the points. Imola is a very fast and sweeping circuit; this should set up well for the Williams, showing some of the faster speeds of the weekend on Miami’s long straight. We’ll see if Williams can assemble it this weekend and show some results.
What team is in the hot seat the most? Williams and Sauber are still pointless. Alpine scored its first point, with Esteban Ocon finishing in 10th place for a single point.
