Brothers in Formula 1

Arthur and Charles LeClerc will make history this weekend at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the first time a brother driver pairing will compete for the same team during the same F1 race weekend. Arthur will replace Carlos Sainz for the FP1 session on Friday as part of the driver development program. This will be the first time two brothers compete for the same team during the same race.

Even though this is the first time for F1, siblings in F1 are not new, dating back to the 1960s with the Rodríguez Brothers. Here are a few famous brothers of the past:

Ricardo & Pedro Rodríguez

The Rodriguez brothers from Mexico competed in Formula 1, during different seasons. Ricardo drove for Ferrari during the 1961 and 1962 seasons. His brother Pedro began his F1 career in 1963, racing for Ferrari NART and other works teams in several subsequent seasons.

Emerson & Wilson Fittipaldi

Emerson and Wilson Fittipaldi competed in the same Formula 1 season but not on the same team. Wilson raced for Brabham from 1972 to 1973 and again in 1975 with his team, Copersucar, under Fittipaldi Automotive. Emerson, a two-time world champion, drove for Lotus and Marlboro McLaren. After the 1975 season, Emerson took over and raced for Copersucar Fittipaldi from 1976 to 1980.

Ian & Jody Scheckter

Although they drove for different teams, Ian and Jody Scheckter competed together in Formula 1 from 1974 to 1977. Younger brother Jody is primarily remembered for winning the driver's title with Ferrari in 1979.

Gilles & Jacques-Joseph Villeneuve

During the 1981 season, Both Canadian brothers drove in the Canadian GP, and Caesar's Palace Vegas GP, but younger brother Jacques did not qualify for either race. He attempted the Canadian GP again in 1983 but did not qualify.

Teo & Corrado Fabi

Teo and Corrado Fabi competed in the same season for the same team but did not participate in the same races. Corrado served as Teo's backup driver while Teo was simultaneously racing in IndyCar during the 1984 season for Brabham/MRD.

Ralf & Michael Schumacher

The Schumacher brothers are among the most notable siblings in the F1 paddock. Both drivers enjoyed long and successful careers in Formula 1 but never raced for the same teams during the same seasons. Ralf primarily drove for Williams, Toyota, and Jordan, while his brother Michael spent most of his career with Ferrari, Benetton, and Mercedes. Interestingly, both Schumacher brothers achieved individual wins during the 2001, 2002, and 2003 seasons.

These are just a few brothers who have competed in Formula 1.
